Pre-Trial judge asked the Special Tribunal for Lebanon which is investigating the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri Monday the trial of four suspects belonging to Hezbollah in absentia.
Under the rules of the Court that if the accused is not arrested within 30 days from the date of announcement of the indictment, the judge may request the Pre-Trial Chamber to initiate in the first class action trial in absentia.
The Pre-Trial Judge that "this period has begun a maximum at September 15, 2011, on the date of publishing a poster containing photos of accused and their personal information and the charges assigned to each of them in the most prominent Lebanese newspapers."
In conclusion, the court statement "on the first-class rooms now separated to meet the conditions necessary for the commencement of the trial in absentia, so as to ensure the protection of rights of the accused."
The Special Tribunal for Lebanon issued international arrest warrants against the 4 elements of Hezbollah, accusing them of involvement in the assassination of Hariri and 22 others on February 14, 2005 and handed over the arrest warrant to the Lebanese authorities on 30 June, but none of the defendants had not been arrested.
Hezbollah denied any role in the bombing in Beirut in 2005 and killed Hariri along with 21 others.
